If you’re new to breastfeeding, that initial shock of baring your chest in public can be uncomfortable, to say the least. For many new moms, learning the art of “covering up” while awkwardly holding a baby under a blanket is enough to give up on the idea altogether. That’s why we’ve assembled a collection of chic and cleverly inconspicuous maternal wear to make breastfeeding that much easier for everyone.

Why? Because according to science, breastfeeding is one of the most important things you can do for your newborn. Most of us are aware that a mother’s breast milk has a positive impact on her baby’s development. For instance, breastfed newborns are less likely to develop asthma, ear infections, eczema, respiratory infections, type 2 diabetes, leukemia, and even sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office on Women’s Health.

But studies have also suggested that breastfeeding can strengthen the bond between mother and child well past infancy and toddlerhood. Additionally, breast milk may also have a positive impact on a child’s intelligence. In a study published in June 2018 in the journal Developmental Psychology, a correlation was found between breastfeeding throughout the first six months of infancy and improved intelligence later in life.

But if the stats still aren’t enough for you to get over your fear of public nudity (fair), perhaps an adorable, yet modest, nursing outfit will give you the extra encouragement you may need. (It also makes for one less thing to worry about carrying in that ever-growing baby bag.)

Here are some of our favorites:

1Seraphine Sea Breeze Polka Dot Nursing Dress

This U.K.-based maternity line made major waves when Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, was seen in the brand multiple times throughout her pregnancies with Princess Charlotte and Prince George. When it’s time to feed, simply pull back the silky, stretchy fabric of the knotted V-neck. The best part is this ocean-green number keeps its shape, and with the adjustable back tie, it works well during and after pregnancy.
